The King’s Academy was founded in 2003 in the second year of the City Academies programme. Attracted by the outstanding reputation of Emmanuel College in Gateshead, Middlesbrough’s Local Authority approached Sir Peter Vardy to join them in the reorganisation of secondary education in the town which led to The King’s replacing two existing secondary schools, Coulby and Brackenhoe, as well as embracing the students coming from the recently-closed Beverley School for the Deaf.

The King's AcademyThe King’s opened as an 11-18 school of 1,150 students in September 2003, with its Sixth Form provision starting a year later in September 2004. During the last nine years, we have has enjoyed a tremendous rise in our GCSE exam results from an average of 22% 5+ A* – C pass rate at the predecessor schools to 89% in 2012.

Improvements in other key measures such as 5 good passes including English and Mathematics, average points score per student and KS3 SATs scores have been equally impressive.

The Academy is heavily over-subscribed. It was recognised as

a good school with many strong features”

by Ofsted in its first full Inspection in 2005, and as

a good school with many outstanding features” in its second Inspection in 2009.”

The King's AcademyIn January 2009, the DCSF identified The King’s as one of the top 100 most improved schools in the country, the most improved school in the North East region and the most improved school in Middlesbrough. Our CVA (Contextual Value Added) scores are consistently well above the England average and place us comfortably in the top 25% of all schools nationally for ‘value added’.

Perhaps the Academy’s greatest pleasure, however, is to see the inclusive manner in which its students operate, with 100 students having Statements of Special Educational Need for Deaf or Hearing Impairment, Blind or Visual Impairment or Moderate Learning Difficulties. Inspired by our Christian ethos, which values everyone as equal in the sight of God, we are ‘humbly proud’ of what happens in our school.
