Curriculum

The King's Academy offers a broad curriculum in all year groups, designed to support each student in achieving their personal best.

At Key Stage 3, students study the following subjects: English, maths, science, PTE (philosophy, theology and ethics), PE, history, geography, a modern foreign language (French, Spanish or German), business, enterprise and ICT, engineering, art, food and performing arts.  Students are placed in sets according to their ability in most subjects.  Certain subjects such as engineering, art, food and performing arts are delivered in the form of an 'Arts Carousel'.  Furthermore, students in Year 9 study a bespoke enterprise course and are engaged in a pilot of the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award.  Students with weak literacy and numeracy skills receive additional support as necessary.

At Key Stage 4, students study a core curriculum (of English, maths, science, PTE and non-examined PE), along with a wide range of optional subjects at GCSE or BTEC including English literature, history, geography, a modern foreign language (French, Spanish or German), business, enterprise and ICT, economics, sport, media, engineering, resistant materials, graphic products, art, textiles, food, catering, drama, dance, performing arts, travel & tourism, health & social care, British Sign Language tuition, Braille tuition, Prince's Trust XL and Life Skills.  Our most able students are encouraged to study an additional course of AS Level Critical Thinking.

At key stage 5, courses are typically offered at A-Level and BTEC National.  Subjects include English language, English literature, maths & statistics, maths & mechanics, further maths, physics, chemistry, biology, French, Spanish, German, history, government & politics, geography, RE, business studies, economics, ICT, psychology, health & social care, PE, sport, product design, art, textiles and theatre studies.  Students would typically study 3 or 4 subjects at AS Level, typically continuing with 3 at A2 Level.
