Physical Education

The Academy PE department has:

 

  • Seven student changing rooms
  • Three Officials changing rooms.
  • A staff office
  • Sports hall (930m x 17m) with multi sport scoring unit
  • Fitness suite
  • Dance studio
  • Floodlit Astroturf (100m x 60m) comprising Football and Hockey pitches
  • Tarmac games area comprising 4 netball courts or 5 tennis courts
  • Rugby pitches - One full size and one junior size
  • Football pitches - 1 large and 2 small football pitches
  • Concrete throwing circle and a Long / Triple jump sandpit


The department is well equipped to teach most sports and also has access to audio visual and ICT aids for teaching. Both staff and students have access to a digital and video library.

The department is well equipped with specialist equipment such as fitness testing equipment and Trampolines.

The Academy has an active House System which involves a large number of sporting activities throughout the year. These include Sports Day and the Swimming Gala, two of the larger events.

The department is actively involved in a large range of activities and fixtures involving local schools within the Middlesbrough and Cleveland County Schools Football Leagues, Middlesbrough Schools Rugby competitions, Middlesbrough Schools Netball Leagues, Middlesbrough and Cleveland County Schools Hockey Leagues, Middlesbrough and Cleveland County Schools Athletics and Cross Country Competitions,

Together with the other Academies within the Emmanuel Schools Foundation we are also involved in additional events such as; ESF Lions Rugby Tour, ESF Olympics and the ESF Rugby Day,

As part of our links with our feeder Primary Schools we organise and host a number of Primary Schools competitions culminating in our own Y6 mini Olympics,

As well as our many external fixture and tournaments within Durham, North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Middlesbrough we are also involved with Emmanuel Schools Foundation Lions Rugby Tour Emmanuel 7’s rugby tournament, University of Teesside 6th form visit, Social trips with the Sixth Form, Step into sport 16- 19 Volunteers Conference, CSLA Primary liaison work.

 

Course Outline/Overview

 

Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 - Core

Every student in the Academy has two forty-five minute lessons per week in which a variety of winter and summer games, gymnastics, athletics is taught. Each student also takes part in a health related fitness course each year.

Optional GCSE - years 10 and 11

Students have four forty-five minute lessons per week. Two lessons are given over to practical activities and two to the theoretical side of the subject. This is a course designed for the more able student who wishes to extend their knowledge of the subject. The normal group size is thirty students

Options JSLA

This course is for 14 – 16 year olds, leadership skills, coaching and working with young children.

Optional AS and A level – Years 12 and 13

These courses include the development of sports and pastimes from their inception to today, charting their role in society both in the UK and abroad together with the practical element which focuses on the way the body develops and responds to exercise. Usually there are 12 to 15 students per year taking part in these courses

Optional CSLA – Years 12 and 13

This course is for students over 16 and involves an extended programme of skills working on sport and leadership coaching skills. This course is run in conjunction with the SSCO programme with students undertaking voluntary placements at local clubs or our feeder primary schools.

 

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences

The BTEC Level 3 Diploma is a qualification comprising of core and specialist units which cover aspects of knowledge, understanding and competency necessary for employment within the sector. This course is suitable for 16-19 year olds who have already decided that they wish to enter this area of work. Candidates will require a high skill level, a wide range of sporting skills and a commitment to coaching and leading others. It is equivalent to two GCEs
